Avegant is seeking an Opto-Mechanical Engineer to contribute to our cutting-edge near eye display technology. The position will be filled by a highly-motivated individual with at least 3 years of experience in a design focused environment. This position will be responsible for designing the housings and mechanisms for integrating optics into advanced near eye displays. This is a great opportunity to be a part of a fast-moving team working on optical technologies to enable previously impossible experiences in the AR space. This position will work closely with our mechanical engineering, optical and industrial design teams. This position reports to the Director Mechanical Engineering. The job is based in Belmont, CA, and requires that you be onsite and not remote.
Previous experience developing injection molded components and assembly design is required to be considered for this opportunity.
Design opto-mechanical components and mechanisms to enclose, retain, and maintain alignment of optical elements within system tolerance specifications.
Select materials for optical bench assembly based on optical alignment tolerance, manufacturing tolerances, temperature variation, and wear.
Work with mechanical and industrial design teams to meet ergonomic requirements.
Represent the optics development team during all engineering builds and system performance testing.
Produce design documentation packages for vendors including optical and mechanical drawings with specification, tolerance, and special process steps.
Create and manage BOMs, part orders, and prototype builds.
Travel overseas may be required.
Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical engineering, optical engineering, or in a related field of study, Master’s degree preferred.
3-6 years of experience in both design and manufacturing of optical systems for consumer electronics products.
Proficiency with using 3D modeling and 2D drafting with recent version of SolidWorks.
Familiarity with optical design software such as Zemax.
Direct experience participating in functional engineering teams and working with domestic and international vendors.
